Characters

  • Adrian Monk

    Tony Shalhoub

Adrian Monk is a legendary former homicide detective in the SFPD, his obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), severely intensified by the death of his wife, interfered with his job, resulting in a still-current suspension from the department. Monk's phobias and anxiety disorders make him depend on personal assistants, who drive him around, do his shopping, and always carry a supply of wipes for his use. They also take an active role in organizing his consultancy work, and sometimes investigate cases themselves. Monk also has great difficulty in standard social. While his obsessive attention to minute detail cripples him socially, it makes him a gifted detective and profiler. He has a photographic memory, and can reconstruct entire crimes based on little more than scraps of detail that seem unimportant to his colleagues. His trademark method of examining a crime scene, which his first assistant Sharona used to call his "Zen Sherlock Holmes thing," is to wander, seemingly aimlessly, around a crime scene, occasionally holding up his hands, as though framing a shot for a photograph.

  • Leland Stottlemeyer

    Ted Levine

Leland Stottlemeyer is Captain of the San Francisco Police Department's Homicide Division, as well as a longtime (albeit long-suffering) friend of Adrian Monk. According to Stottlemeyer, he was the youngest officer in the history of the SFPD to make detective, giving him at least a few years of seniority on Adrian Monk. When Monk was promoted to detective, he was partnered with Stottlemeyer, and right away, showed his amazing abilities when he proved that a prostitute's apparent suicide was murder. Somehow, the two men worked well together, even though Stottlemeyer was later promoted past Monk. At the time Trudy Monk was murdered, Stottlemeyer reluctantly suspended Adrian from duty, though he still remained his friend. Stottlemeyer also found Sharona Fleming and hired her as Monk's practical nurse, which helped Monk to recover from a state of near-catatonia caused by the loss of Trudy.

  • Natalie Jane Davenport Teeger

    Traylor Howard

Natalie Jane Davenport Teeger became Adrian Monk's assistant after Monk's nurse, Sharona Fleming left. Since becoming Monk's assistant, she has become an extremely devoted friend, as well as a devoted assistant. Despite their platonic relationship, there have been instances where other characters have implied that Natalie may have suppressed romantic feelings for Monk through gestures and comments, such as asking them both if they were married/dating. When the two denied the comments, the person who asked would look suspiciously at Natalie, as if they thought there was something more in her denial.
